What is linear video editing, and how does it differ from non-linear editing? | Premiere Pro Dude

Hello dudes!

Today we are going to understand the difference about:

What is linear video editing, and how does it differ from non-linear editing?

Linear video editing is a traditional method of editing video in which the video is edited in a sequential order.

This means that the editor must make cuts and add effects to the video in the order in which they will appear in the final product.

Linear video editing is often done using a physical videotape machine, but it can also be done using a digital video editing software program.

Non-linear video editing (NLE) is a more modern method of editing video in which the video is edited in a non-sequential order.

This means that the editor can make cuts and add effects to the video in any order they want.

Non-linear video editing is typically done using a computer and a digital video editing software program. (Just like our Premiere Pro!)

Linear video editing

Linear video editing was the standard method of editing video for many years. It is still used today by some professional editors, but it is becoming less common as NLE becomes more popular.

Linear video editing is a relatively straightforward process.

The editor begins by loading the video footage onto a videotape machine.

The editor then uses the videotape machine's controls to make cuts and add effects to the video.

The editor can also use a video switcher to mix multiple video sources together.

Once the editor is finished editing the video, they can transfer the edited video to a new videotape or to a digital video file.

Advantages of linear video editing

Linear video editing has a number of advantages, including:

  • It is a relatively simple and straightforward process.
  • It is relatively inexpensive to get started with linear video editing.
  • It is a good way to learn the basics of video editing.

Disadvantages of linear video editing

Linear video editing also has a number of disadvantages, including:

  • It is not as flexible as NLE.
  • It can be time-consuming to edit long videos using linear video editing.
  • It is difficult to make changes to an edited video without having to start over from scratch.

Non-linear video editing

Non-linear video editing (NLE) is a more modern method of editing video in which the video is edited in a non-sequential order. This means that the editor can make cuts and add effects to the video in any order they want. Non-linear video editing is typically done using a computer and a digital video editing software program.

Advantages of non-linear video editing

NLE has a number of advantages over linear video editing, including:

  • It is more flexible than linear video editing.
  • It is easier to make changes to an edited video using NLE.
  • It is easier to collaborate with other editors using NLE.
  • It is easier to export edited videos to different formats using NLE.

Disadvantages of non-linear video editing

NLE also has a number of disadvantages, including:

  • It can be more expensive to get started with NLE than with linear video editing.
  • It can be more complex to learn how to use NLE software.
  • It can be more time-consuming to render edited videos using NLE.

Which type of video editing is right for you?

The best type of video editing for you depends on your needs and budget. If you are just starting out, linear video editing is a good way to learn the basics. But, in today's generation, I will only recommend you use non-linear video editing! Also, if you need to edit long videos or if you want to be able to make changes to your edited videos easily, then NLE is the better choice.

Here are some additional things to consider when choosing between linear and non-linear video editing:

What kind of videos do you want to edit?

If you are only going to be editing short, simple videos, then linear video editing may be sufficient. However, if you want to edit long, complex videos, then you will need to use NLE.

What is your budget?

Linear video editing is less expensive to get started with than NLE. However, the cost of NLE software has come down significantly in recent years, and there are now many free and open-source NLE software programs available.

How much time do you have to learn video editing?

Linear video editing is easier to learn than NLE. However, there are many resources available to help you learn NLE, including online tutorials, books, and classes.

Do you need to collaborate with other editors?

NLE is easier to collaborate with other editors than linear video editing.

So, that's it for today, see you in the next blog.

Till then take care & be happy!

Video Editing, where to start? | Premier Pro Dude 2023

You have been watching several reels, movies, cartoon videos, music videos and many TV channel shows, right? Now, just imagine any of your favorite movie's scenes and just visualize only a fraction of that video like: 2 minutes of scene. Now, after visualizing it, in your mind (imagination), try to observe what things have been done in that video? Observe very carefully! (because this is the most precious advice I would ever give!) You are dissecting the video and understanding the process behind making it! So, for example, you could have observed that the video fraction consisted of two or more different videos.  Also, it could have color correction applied to it. It could have transition effects, dubbed audio and so many things, right? All of this together created a great looking video which forced you to watch it!  Let me show you a reference video for understanding it better!  Also, you could understand the process of making that video only using " observation in your imag

How to understand Video Editing? | Adobe Premier Pro 2023

Video Editing can be understood by curiosity & questioning .  If I see a video & imagine it as a long strip like the below video, I can see different parts of videos are merged together & it has made a video.  Now, whenever you see a video, don’t just watch it. Observe carefully . You have learned everything from your childhood by using observation. So, your observation will help you understand video editing better. Use your imagination here, imagine any of your watched videos & try to look at it from the starting & observe what changes are being done?  For example, video footage could be changed, transitions would be added, effects would be applied and so on.  One more thing to understand something is to visualize its building blocks. For example, here I have shown you the making of a chair.  You can easily observe how a chair is being made. Likewise, you can visualize how the video is being made. When you use your logic with imagination, you get a lot of possibil

Have you ever heard that “ a picture is worth a thousand words ”  Why?  Because, to describe an intention, you will need to speak along with mentioning your intention. Because intentions are the most difficult parameter to understand .  You can draw an image with the same intention, and people will easily understand your perception.  For example, from this image, you can say that we are comparing two objects from which one is 75% and the other is 45%. Now, if we make a video of the same, then it will add emotions.  Any visual perception with emotions, motion (animation), explanation, and representation is the exact interpreter of intentions.  Suppose you do not believe in Ghosts. But why, just after watching the horror movie, you are getting scared of going to your kitchen alone?!!! That’s because video editing can shape your beliefs, it can change the way of observation, and it can change the mindset of people.  That is why we must know and understand the workings of our mind like: Ho
